Home Insurance

Protect Your Largest Purchase

The family home is usually the largest investment you will ever make. Not insuring that purchase can cripple you financially forever if you are not wise enough to take on home insurance.

Remember as well, that usually home insurance just covers the home itself and not the land. Having the money to rebuild is usually the normal method of replacing what you lose. But, if you are areas where an earthquake could destroy the land itself or a mudslide can deposit the actual land itself somewhere else-then you need to make sure you have a replacement cost on the land as well built in to your policy as well. Never hesitate to ask what the policy will cover and not cover. Try to limit unpleasant surprises in the future as much as you possibly can. If you can't get land losses included in your policy then you need to look at added flood and/or earthquake insurance as well.

And you need to have a policy that gives you replacement cost on your house and land. Buying a home for $100,000 and then having to spend $400,000 to replace it twenty years later can be a real problem if you are only insured for the initial purchase price! And the same holds for the contents of your home. Most families make purchases on large appliances, large pieces or furniture as well as televisions and stereo outfits that may last for decades. Will you get the money to buy something off the floor today or thirty years ago? Perhaps you can't fully replace all those precious memories and beloved pieces of family history but at least you can get a great start on making some new ones without the pain of full financial loss staring you in the face.

When shopping for home insurance, check out several offers and remember that items like smoke detectors and burglar alarms not only protect your home but can lower the premiums on your policy as well. Check out to see if there are any other provisions that may come in to play as well...will a certain type of door or window lock lower the premium? How about joining a neighborhood watch campaign? Are you required to have annual checkups from a fire inspector? How close is your fire department? Telling your insurer that they are just around the corner may lower your premiums significantly. Always ask questions and do your homework.
